Garden transformation with Wave Petunias
Suzette Rubio  Wave Blogger

Ever wonder what a new space that’s never had flowers could look like with just a little bit of colour? Well, in our new Step by Step with Wave: Summer Series, we’ll take you on a transformation journey bringing you the ups and downs, perils and successes (yes please!) of gardening with Wave!

Come and join the journey with Shirley as we help her get ready for the summer. All your burning questions will be answered on when to plant your Wave Petunias, when to water, when to fertilise, when to pinch and when to just ride the wave and let your petunias grow and flourish throughout the season.

Flowerless in Batavia

In the first blog, we’ll meet Shirley from Batavia, IL, USA, and assess her space with a builder-grade landscape. She just recently moved into a new development and is in dire need of some bold colour to match her sunny personality.

When asked which are her top 3 colours, Shirley said: red, purple and yellow. Perfect! With Wave Petunias, it’s all about the colour all season long.

Beginner gardener tips

Here are a few things to think about before planting.

How much sun do you have? In Shirley’s small front yard, she gets lots of sun in the afternoon, which is perfect for Wave. They definitely prefer a sunny spot to grow and thrive.

Where is your water access? Wave Petunias need their daily drink of water and it’s good to know the locations of your spigots. At Shirley’s, she has a long hose from the backyard with a sprinkler and an attachment, as well as access from her garage.

What is the consistency of your soil? Since Shirley’s house is in a newly built subdivision, usually what you’ll find underneath the ground is only a few inches of good soil then lots of construction debris and rocks. Upon further inspection, her soil is mostly clay, which isn’t horrible. But with the right amount of potting soil to mix in, as well as compost to amend the soil, it’s an easy fix.

Did you measure your garden? As a beginner gardener, Shirley needs to know how much space she has to help figure out how many plants to buy. It’s good to have a tape measure handy. By measuring the length and width of the space, we can calculate just how many Wave Petunias we need to brighten up the existing monochrome landscape. We measured Shirley’s garden to be approximately 14 feet x 10 feet (4.3m x 3m).

Check out the first episode below with all the details! Stay tuned for the next blog in this Summer Series when we go shopping for all the flowers we’ll be using in this step-by-step garden transformation.
