One of the keys to great-looking petunias is watering. Be vigilant in your watering routine and you’ll be sure to see the results of a lush display through the gardening season.
Get your Wave® Petunias to spread and trail fast in planters, baskets, window boxes and landscapes. Wave plants are easy to grow, and keeping your Wave plants well-watered especially in the warm, sunny months is the best way to be sure you’ll have a backyard, or front yard, full of brightly coloured blooms in no time.
When to water
In-ground: Water petunias that have been planted in the ground every 7-10 days during dry weather. Try to aim your hose or watering can at the soil level, avoiding too much overhead watering onto leaves and blooms.
Containers and planters: They may require daily watering to keep the soil moist, not soggy. If you’re not sure, take the dryness test. Test the dryness of the soil by the weight of the pot. If it feels heavy, no need to water. You can also stick your finger in the soil and remove a small amount. Roll it into a little ball and squeeze. Your soil should be moist enough to keep its shape but not release water when squeezed.
Should I use mulch?
Mulch keeps moisture in the soil by inhibiting evaporation. Use mulch on gardening beds, as well as a thin layer in containers, to help your petunias retain as much moisture as possible in the soil. A layer of 2-3 in. (5-8 cm) over garden beds and a 1-in. (3-cm) layer in pots will do the job. An added bonus for using mulch is it helps prevent weed growth.
How often should I fertilise?
Since Wave Petunias are wonderfully, fast-growing plants, you’ll need to keep up with providing the proper nutrition for adequate bloom production. This means fertilising. If you notice a yellowing on the leaves, that’s a sure sign your plants need a dose of fertiliser. Adding feed to your watering schedule about every 10 to 14 days is a perfect routine.
