The Wave Crew Wave Petunias | Cool Wave Pansies
MEET OUR PINK POT AMBASSADOR FOR JANUARY: @thefancygarden!
Describe your garden.
My garden is completely composed of containers. I have a mix of annuals, perennials, veggies, and even trees. I have been renting since 2011 and have moved 3 times so I need to be able to take as many plants as possible with me wherever I go. Hopefully we will find our forever home soon and most of my plants can finally go into the ground. I have several roses that have been in their pots for 7 years and I keep them in tip top shape with root pruning and fertilization.
Tell us about the first time you ever gardened.
I have loved plants since I was a kid. I would talk my mom into buying me African Violets and other houseplants from the grocery store. At 16 I was growing tomato plants and I even designed and planted a rose garden outside my bedroom window. It was a dream come true.
What is your favorite combination using Wave Petunias or Cool Wave Pansies?
I love combining light and dark colors in planters and hanging baskets.
Give one suggestion for what a gardener can do with the Wave Pink Pot after they take the petunias out of it.
I reuse my pots year after year to hold the plants I grow from seed.
If you could have one gardening superpower, what would it be?
That I could snap my fingers and all the plants would be watered. I hand water my entire collection and in the heat of summer it can sometimes take almost 2 hours to water everything properly.
Share your secrets! What’s the best gardening hack you know?
Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize. This is my number one tip for having a container garden that keeps on blooming right through the season. This is especially true for hungry plants like petunias. In 2018, I created my website www.thefancygarden.com to share my gardening experiences and help people grow their best gardens.

BONUS QUESTIONS:
The colors in your garden are so vibrant! Do you have a favorite color you plant more of? Do you have any color themes?
I love color in the garden. No color is off limits to me. I gravitate most towards pinks and least towards yellow and orange but I still do include them because I love having those colors in fall. I love seeing pastel colors and blue in spring and vibrant colors in summer.
Tell us about the pros/cons of gardening in California.
Where I live in the Mojave Desert there are 3 very hot months of summer and temps can be over 100 degrees for days, sometimes weeks at a time. The plants can really struggle and some even go dormant during this time. It is important to water the plants well and try to situate them so they receive shade during the hottest part of the day. The rest of the year is beautiful weather that more than makes up for those 3 months. I love having flowers and greens to look at and harvest in the middle of winter.
Another challenge of California gardening is the water issues that we face. We have to be very conscious of how we use our water resources. It takes at least 3 gallons for my water to heat up for showering and dishwashing and I collect that water in buckets and use it outside in the garden. Most of the yard is xeriscaped to save on water, and there is no lawn. In drought areas, it is a good idea to put the thirsty plants up close to the house where they will be enjoyed and used the most and xeriscape the rest of the yard.
