DESIGN TUTORIAL: Thriller, Filler, Spiller
The Wave Crew  Wave Petunias | Cool Wave Pansies

Many gardening experts use a phrase for a design concept called, “Thriller, Filler, Spiller.” It’s a method that even a beginner gardener can use to create stunning, professional planters. You won’t believe how easy it is to plan and plant your own combinations! Let’s break it down:

The thriller component gives height to your combo. Initially, you may not think about incorporating different levels in your planter, but having a tall flower or plant provides a perfect centerpiece or backdrop for the rest of the plants!

A filler does exactly what it says – it fills your planter! These plants, like Wave Petunias, create a unified look among the various plants in your combo by spreading out, filling in gaps, and creating a voluminous display of flowers.

The spiller is the opposite of the thriller – it spills over the sides of the planter. Ivy and dichondra are perfect for creating a draping effect. These plants tend to give your combos a natural/organic style, just like you’ve created a miniature garden right in your planter!

Most importantly, have fun with creating your planter combos! You don’t always need to use all three elements. Think of the “filler” as your base and then add in other plants as you wish!
