Best Trailing Plants for Your Sun Containers in Cooler Months
Ilyin Costello  Wave Team Intern

One of the most important elements in any sun container is a strong trailing element. These plants act as the “spiller” if you’re using the “thriller, filler, spiller” design method. They soften any sharp container edges and will give your container a lush, sprawling appearance.

Cool Wave® Pansies are fast growing, cool weather tolerant, and provide any design with vibrant trailing flowers that will spill over hanging baskets and patio containers. These large blooms are also available in a variety of colors that are sure to fit any design aesthetic and will create a unique trailing habit for your flower pot.

Our first trailing pansy that is sure to brighten up your containers is Cool Wave Strawberry Swirl, with a pronounced yellow face and complimentary pink caps that can be used with other light-colored plants to give your container a soft pastel glow. The Cool Wave line of pansies have the added benefit of a vigorous full branching growth habit that will trail out of your design. It will also be a standout vertical element that will bring interest late in the season. This color is perfect for mimicking the deep reds of the fall, and will bring much needed warmth to your containers throughout the colder months.

In cooler temperatures you will see the dark blues in the center pattern deepen, and the flowers will transform to a frosty light blue from the edges as they mature throughout the season. In the southern part of the United States, the winter performance of these Cool Wave Pansies is unmatched. They will be the first flower to re-emerge and trail out of hanging baskets and patio containers alike in the early spring months.
